Beneath a canopy of red and yellow lanterns at Wong Tai Sin Temple during Chinese New Year, the courtyard filled with worshippers. Umbrellas opened among the crowd, cutting through the field of colour like pockets of negative space. I was drawn to the compression of ritual and skyline. High-rise blocks and scaffolding rise directly beyond the ornate roofs, their pale grids holding against the lanterns’ glow.
