SO is a Hong Kong based fine art photographer and educator. She holds an MFA from the Yale School of Art and has pursued an MA in Arts Administration at Columbia University. Since the mid-1990s, she has taught at higher education institutions, including the School of Visual Arts, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, and the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Her photographic practice has examined Hong Kong’s continuously transforming urban landscape for over three decades. She has received multiple grants from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council supporting the publication of two photographic albums and exhibitions across Asia, Europe, and North America. She was also a three-time finalist for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize (2008, 2011, 2013).
In 2021, SO was commissioned by the Art Promotion Office to create a site specific project marking the 150th anniversary of the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens. She was also selected by Nikon Asia to participate in the 4th edition of Through Asian Eyes, curated by Objectifs Centre for Photography and Film, Singapore. Her interactive work Ten Thousand Messages premiered at the 4th Hong Kong International Photo Festival and was subsequently acquired by the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.
Her two ongoing series under the title Nights in Suspense are the result of her practice grounded in sustained observation of the city, turning toward nocturnal photography in mid 2015. Amid prolonged insomnia and severe anemia, the works explore how extended wakefulness reshapes perception of time and attention. Through this heightened awareness, the night becomes a terrain of light, stillness, and suspension, revealing the subtle and distinctive atmosphere of Hong Kong after dark.
